Yuki received her Ph.D. from GPSS-GLI in March 2018 and is currently Project Researcher at the University of Tokyo's Presidential Endowed Chair for "Platinum Society." Her work there focuses on analyzing resident perspectives to motivate engagement in personal health maintenance. She is also Lead Author for the methodological assessment regarding the diverse conceptualization of multiple values of nature and its benefits (2018-2020) by the Intergovernmental science-policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES).
At GPSS, Yuki adapted the Inclusive Wealth Index, proposed as an indicator of a society's performance more comprehensive and relevant to sustainability than e.g. GDP, at the regional level. To this end, she employed a mix of quantitative and qualitative methodologies to portray the state of Sado Island, a socio-ecological production landscape in Japan. She has continued her endeavor to better capture non-market and intangible aspects of human-nature interactions.
Her research has focused on how people conceptually think about and relate to nature, and how this human-nature relationship affects their physical interaction with the natural environment. She received her BA in Psychology and Environmental Studies from Middlebury College in Vermont, USA, and her MS in Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
